Aqsens Health’s new insider in Boston – Uzma Riyaz joins the team as a Project Coordinator
Aqsens Health is pleased to welcome Uzma Riyaz to the team. Uzma joins Aqsens Health as a Project Coordinator, initially supporting our research collaboration with Harvard Medical School in Boston, and later expanding to other projects in the area. Uzma took the time to answer a few questions about her role at Aqsens, what she looks forward to when managing high-quality projects, and what she thinks are the most important success factors for Aqsens Health in the US
Could you briefly describe your professional background?
Absolutely! I have a diverse background that combines science, business, and language skills. I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Science followed by a Master’s in Business, which gave me a strong foundation in both analytical thinking and strategic management. Before moving to the U.S., I ran a business in Finland for two years, where I gained firsthand experience in entrepreneurship and received a Finnish grant to support my business initiatives.
In addition, I dedicated three years to learning the Finnish language, which has been invaluable in connecting with local communities and understanding Finnish culture more deeply. This blend of science, business, and cultural adaptation has uniquely prepared me for my role here at Aqsens Health, where I’m excited to bring together my skills in project coordination and cross-functional collaboration.
What do you do at Aqsens?
As a Project Coordinator, my role involves managing various aspects of our projects, especially around collaborative research. At Aqsens, my primary focus is to ensure that our research collaboration, including those with institutions like Harvard Medical School, are well-organized, efficient, and impactful. I coordinate between teams, monitor progress, and handle logistics, ensuring quality in all areas and keeping projects on track.
What are the things that you are passionate about in your work?
I’m passionate about bridging science and practical health solutions. I believe that impactful research can truly make a difference when it’s well-organized and collaborative. I enjoy seeing the pieces come together, from data collection to actionable insights, especially knowing the potential impact on healthcare innovation
What are your tasks in Boston related to the collaboration with Harvard Medical School?
My work in Boston revolves around supporting our research collaboration with Harvard Medical School. This involves everything from coordinating sample collection, ensuring proper handling and documentation, to managing timelines and facilitating communication between Aqsens and our Harvard collaborators. It's important that our research collaborations are executed with the highest quality. It’s a dynamic role that requires both scientific understanding and project management skills.
What are your next steps over in Boston?
So far, we’ve collected more than a hundred patient samples, and sample collection is ongoing as we aim to reach our target number for robust data analysis. Each additional sample contributes valuable data, helping us refine our findings and achieve comprehensive insights.
Recently, I have discussed potential collaboration with clinicians who have access to thousands of samples. I look forward to connecting Aqsens with these clinicians to further strengthen our research efforts.
In addition to the US, you and your family also lived in Finland for several years. How was moving from Finland to the US?
Moving from Finland to the U.S. has been a major transition, especially as a mother with young kids. Finland is such a beautiful and family-friendly country, and we had a very comfortable, cozy life there. The lifestyle in Finland places a high value on work-life balance, and there’s a strong emphasis on creating a safe, enriching environment for children. I often find myself missing that aspect of life—the peace, nature, and the unique sense of security Finland offers.
Could you see yourself someday returning to Finland?
Although I’m deeply committed to my role here in North America and excited about the experiences I’m gaining, Finland is always in my heart. It’s a place where I felt a strong sense of belonging and where my family shared many cherished memories. I look forward to the idea of returning one day and reconnecting with that community, bringing back the insights and skills I’ve developed here to contribute to projects in Finland and continue building on the connections that mean so much to me.
How does your experience of both cultures and countries help you in advancing Aqsens’ projects in North America?
My experience in both cultures offers a unique perspective on how to approach our projects in North America. Finland and the U.S. each bring distinct strengths to the table, especially in research and healthcare. Being able to bridge these perspectives helps me foster collaboration and bring innovative ideas forward in ways that resonate with both Aqsens and our partners here.
What do you think are the key success factors for Aqsens in North America?
Success for Aqsens Health in North America will likely come down to three key factors: the strength of our scientific collaborations, our ability to adapt to regional healthcare needs, and maintaining robust, organized project execution. Aqsens has the right expertise and innovative solutions, so combining that with effective partnerships and a deep understanding of the American market will be essential. America, especially Boston and Cambridge, is certainly the key hub for pharmaceutical innovation and Aqsen's collaboration in Boston will be very useful for the company.
